Conor McGregor’s “Triple Crown” in the UFC
Conor McGregor has the MMA community talking like only he knows how, announcing that he’s coming for the UFC welterweight title. A former featherweight and lightweight champion already, McGregor now seeks to make history by being the first competitor in U.F.C. history to hold titles in three weight classes — an accomplishment he calls his “Triple Crown.”
The Irish star feels a clash with current welterweight kingpin Islam Makhachev is the next logical step in his career. Conor McGregor had already noted Makhachev’s rise to the 170-pound ranks and even credited the champ with bravery for trying out a new weight class. But, he assures that but hes not turning down an invite from the UFC challenging for a title in the Octagon if it’s offered.
Conor McGregor also suggested that the fight could happen at then-rumored “White House” event scheduled for mid-2026. If the spectacle comes to pass, it will be one of the most discussed cards in UFC history — and Conor McGregor believes it would provide the perfect platform for a comeback.
Makhachev Rivalry Rekindled
A potential McGregor vs. Makhachev title fight is huge not just because it would be for the belt, but because of long-standing rivalry story lines. Makhachev, who earns victory through his superior wrestling and cerebral approach to fighting recently emerged as one of the welterweight divisions’ most formidable forces. The technical precision and an improving stand-up game have only furthered the layers to a man long considered one of the best.
Yet Conor McGregor remains confident. Though he has been out of the cage since 2021, he says he is training every day and sharpening the tools that once rendered him the U.F.C.’s most bankable star. He thinks his improved striking, ability to move and fight IQ could give Makhachev’s style some fits – especially when this is still the division where Conor McGregor has fought and put dudes on their butts with authority.
Doubters think Conor McGregor is past his sell-by date in competing with a prime Makhachev but the Irishman does not appear to be listening. To him, the bout means more than a title fight; it’s about legacy, redemption and an opportunity to make history. He also remains optimistic that the UFC will soon make his next fight official.
Now that they’ve set the stage, the MMA world anxiously waits to see whether one of the biggest beefs in UFC history will finally come together.
