Why Effective Meetings Matter at Snowflake

Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy believes that many meetings can become overly bureaucratic and unproductive when a structure and engagement aren’t involved. As Snowflake, a cloud-based data warehousing giant, has scaled with Ramaswamy at the helm, he has reiterated the importance of not making meetings a regular activity or habit. At Snowflake, the company tracks meetings, whether it is a call or a physical meeting, with a motive to decrease meetings and increase meeting effectiveness by making them more purposeful.

Ramaswamy has described four rules that must be adhered to in every single meeting that takes place in Snowflake. These rules have been communicated publicly by the founder. They are not only time-efficient; they help create discussions that are productive.

1. Setting and Sharing Agendas with Notes

Ramaswamy believes that every meeting should have an agenda, and the agenda, together with other support documents, should be made available to all beforehand. He believes that in the absence of an agenda, there’s no way he can attend the meeting. Ramaswamy also believes that every meeting should have formal meeting notes and other documents that follow the meeting, and this will allow all teams to be held accountable for decisions made in the process. Ramaswamy takes the early hours of the morning to mentally prepare for the first meeting of the day.

2. Establish Clear Purpose and Participants

The meetings could not possibly take place for the sole purpose of fulfilling an organizational checkbox and “keeping them in the loop.” This one aspect, according to Ramaswamy, means that the objective of every given meeting is defined and that only those who are strictly required are needed for the accomplishment of the objective are invited.

3. Encourage Open Discussion Rather Than Reading

Instead of employing meetings for fact-sharing or for going over data that can be reviewed offline, Ramaswamy focuses on having open-ended conversations and differing opinions. Ramaswamy clearly believes that the actual point of bringing all these people together is to gain innovative insights through conversations. During meetings when dominated by some voices, he ensures a balanced discussion.

4. Keep It Short and Productive

Finally, Ramaswamy also emphasizes the importance of curtailing meetings. They should last no longer than is absolutely necessary. Moreover, once meetings start, he is always eager to conclude them ahead of schedule in case all the decisions have already been made.

Through the enforcement of these meeting guidelines, Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy is looking to turn mandatory scheduling blocks on the calendar into productive times to drive decision-making and organizational agility.
